Amigo Month is the UK’s annual history and culture month dedicated to the vast community of people that live across the British Isles with roots in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries and territories. Running every year from the 7th September - 12th October, it celebrates five weeks of diverse cultures, histories, languages, and contributions from Latin America, Iberia, Africa, and beyond.

Our core objective is to ensure that these communities—their history, heritage, contributions, aspirations, and needs—have a stronger, more visible place in British public life. Amigo Month acts as a common platform that supports, publicises, and gives visibility to independently organised festivals and events across the UK, operating firmly on a "by the communities, for the communities" ethos.

These 35 dates have profound historical and symbolic significance, framing a unique period that connects our communities across the British Isles to a global network of shared milestones.

Why the 7th September - 12th October?

The 7th September marks Brazil’s Independence Day and an important national date for Mozambique—these two nations representing the overwhelming majority of the world's Portuguese speakers—as well as the anniversary of historic treaties paving the way for the Panama Canal.

The 12th October is commemorated globally across the Spanish-speaking world and Brazil, marking historical turning points like the first global circumnavigation and early maritime voyages, while also serving as a day of modern celebration such as Children's Day in Brazil and Independence Day in Equatorial Guinea.
